Major travel comparison sites, such as Expedia and Orbitz, have made it much easier for us common folk to become world-savvy travelers. No longer are we dependent on travel agents to compare flight ticket prices between multiple airlines—we can do it ourselves with two taps of a mouse! In fact, the last time I used a travel agent was seven years ago, in order to map out a route to Molde. If I were to make that same trip today, there’s no doubt I could pull it off without a third party, just by spending a litle more time in front the computer screen.

Not as much information, for sure. Admittedly, a large part of the reason for this is that traveling by car is stressful for most birds. When pickpockets three I did bravely subdue?

I was living abroad when, wholly by chance,
My brother’s glee club was on tour in France.
I packed up my things, met Father and Mum,
And drove to the north to have us some fun.
At Omaha Beach, where so many fell,
The glee club boys sang of faith and farewell.
Then onward through Caen and Sainte-Mère-Église
In weather so scorching, we prayed for a breeze.
And, then, off to Paris! La ville des lumières!
The Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and ladies so fair!
Since I knew the town, I worked with pride
Playing the role of translator and guide.

And so, filled with visions of rigatoni and fettuccini, you click on the link on the RyanAir website, and … oh, the humanity!
Many study abroad students (and well-seasoned travelers, and natives alike) have been seduced while overseas by the call of low-fare, no-frills, awesomely-advertised-bottom-barrel-price airlines. For someone who’s attempting a European tour on a budget, it seems idiotic to not travel that way.
But just remember the old adage about a thing looking too good to be true.
